Being an effective workplace communicator in 2023

Communicating in the workplace is critical.

Whether it's your teammates, colleagues, or clients, being an effective communicator is one of the most important skills we hold.

A lot of the training and coaching I provide is regarding how individuals can improve their public speaking skills when in the workplace.

I've written a list of some of the key things to think about to be the most effective communicator in 2023 in the workplace.

  1. Be clear and concise:

When communicating with your colleagues, managers, or whoever, it's important to be clear and to the point. This means avoiding unnecessary jargon or flowery language and getting straight to the point. Doing so will help ensure that your message is understood and that you are taken seriously. This is something I'm super passionate about, but I'll put that aside for now.

  2. Use active language:

Instead of using passive language, try to use active language whenever possible. For example, instead of saying "The report was completed by me," say "I completed the report." Using active language shows that you are taking ownership of your work and are confident in your abilities.

  3. Practice good listening skills:

It's not just about what you say, but also how well you listen to others. Pay attention to what others are saying and show that you are interested in what they have to say by asking questions and making eye contact.

  4. Use nonverbal cues effectively:

Your body language and facial expressions can speak volumes, so be aware of how you present yourself when communicating with others. Stand up straight, make eye contact, and use open, welcoming body language to show that you are confident and approachable.

  5. Be open to feedback:

Don't be afraid to ask for feedback from your colleagues and management. This can help you identify areas where you can improve and show that you are open to learning and growing.

  6. Stay professional:

Always remember to maintain a professional demeanor, even in challenging situations. This means being respectful to others and keeping your emotions in check. But you should ensure that you're being authentic to yourself. No one likes a fake; they can be sniffed out a mile away.

  7. Use email and other written communication effectively:

In the modern workplace, it's important to be able to communicate effectively through written channels such as email. Be sure to proofread your emails before sending them, use a clear and concise subject line, and avoid using all caps or excessive exclamation points. Check out some previous blog posts on ways to include information effectively such as through the 'What, So What, Now What?' method.

By following these tips, you can improve your communication skills and stand out in the workplace.

We have the potential to speak up, show up and make an impact every day. Put your best self forward and show everyone the value you bring to your work.
