Make public speaking achievable in three steps

communication fear publicspeaking Oct 20, 2022

I used to hate speaking publicly.

It might seem surprising if you’ve met me.

But I was able to change that and for the better ⬇️

There have been a few things I’ve been able to implement to make me feel more comfortable.

It’s been about flipping my perspective but also putting in place some practice elements that worked for me:

1. Asking yourself why you're fearful of this:

Understanding why this makes you uncomfortable is important as you can get to the root cause and address it.

Is it because you’re concerned with what others may think?

Is it based on past experience?

Understanding that fear can assist you to move in for it.

2. Knowing how to prepare:

If you don’t know how to prepare for a presentation at work, at uni, or in front of the board, it can be scary. Having a process in place provides you with the framework for success.

Simply ‘plug and play’ and give yourself sufficient time to do the work and practice makes it easier.

3. Making the experience for the audience:

Move the perspective from yourself and to the people listening.

Will they benefit from what you have to say?

Will people move to action as a result of listening to you communicate?

Implementing a lot of this has allowed me to speak at global conferences, be a finalist as Speaker of the Year at the International Coaches Awards, and be respected at work for my knowledge and experience.

This is why I’m creating the Communicate for Impact online course. I want people to move away from being fearful and have practical steps to tackle a presentation and public speaking opportunity.

I can’t wait to share more and get to the launch of the course soon.
