Top 5 Tips for Effective Communication

Recently, I sat down with Jules Lund on Disrupt Radio to chat about my top five tips to being a  better communicator. This is what we discussed:

1. Know Your Audience: The Clarity Triangle

The cornerstone of communication lies in understanding your audience – a non-negotiable aspect in crafting a message that resonates. I've developed the 'Clarity Triangle,' a method I created to focus on three principal facets:

(1) who are these people you're speaking with (understanding the audience's characteristics, and their level of understanding),

(2) understanding the context you're in and what you're presenting on, and

(3) presenting contextually appropriate content.

Being in tune with your audience ensures that your words are not just heard, but truly listened to.

2. Simplify to Amplify: Speaking in Plain English

Complex ideas need to be shared in simple language. The second strategy emphasizes the importance of using plain English.

This approach is crucial, especially in platforms like TEDx where diversity among the listeners is vast. Breaking down sophisticated concepts into simple, understandable language broadens your reach, connecting you to a larger cohort of the audience.

When your message is clear and accessible, it’s more likely to be appreciated and shared – an outcome any storyteller would aspire to achieve.

3. Structure Your Story: Frameworks for Impact

Every stellar presentation adheres to a well-considered framework. I steer individuals using my 'Ultimate Presentation Structure Guide,' which incubates your talk within a structure that balances authority with engagement.

A great story commences with a gripping statement, establishing the speaker's credibility, followed by the distillation of the presentation into three main points.

Blending the analytical with the emotional, the narrative is then concluded with a succinct summary and a compelling call to action. This structure ensures your communication remains focused, effective, and memorable.

4. Assert With Active Voice: Command Attention

Public speaking is not just about what you say but how you say it. Employing an active tone doesn’t just inspire confidence in your delivery, it makes your sentences robust and purposeful. A passive voice can induce ambiguity and lessen the impact of your words.

By directly stating 'Sue changed the tire' instead of 'The tire was changed by Sue,' you seize control of the narrative.

Your speech becomes a hammer – each point driving deeper into the bedrock of your audience's attention.

5. Establish Credibility: Build Trust Through Communication

Lastly, credibility is an anchor of trust. Words carry weight, and certain terms or phrases can sneak in doubt about your expertise. Scrapping 'I think' from your vocabulary is a small but mighty revision – projecting the image of someone who doesn’t just think but knows.

Similarly, eliminating words like 'just' can prevent your statements from belittling your own importance or message. These nuances may seem trivial, yet they profoundly shape how your audience perceives you and your story.

To empower your story, focus on harnessing these five strategies. They can transform your communication from informative to influential, resonating with and inspiring your audience. It's not just about the message but the bridge you build to your audience, allowing them to walk across and embrace your ideas.
